FAQ
Q What is Kanbaroo and how is my data stored?
Kanbaroo is an offline‑first kanban board. By default, your boards are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB). Optionally, you can bind to a file using the File System Access API so your data lives in a JSON file (e.g., in OneDrive/Dropbox). If permission is unavailable, the app continues working in the browser store and offers a Reconnect prompt when needed.
Q How do I choose between Browser and File storage?
Open Storage from the main menu. Pick Browser to work entirely on-device, or Bind to File to select a JSON file. The storage modal shows which option is active and (when bound) the file name. You can import/export/merge between the two without changing the active binding.
Q What happens if the app can’t access my bound file?
Kanbaroo will continue using the Browser store while showing a Reconnect banner. Click it to re‑grant permission. Nothing is lost; you can also export from Browser and re‑import to File at any time.
Q How do I share or export a Task or a whole Lane?
Use the Share button on a card (Task) or beside a lane’s metrics (Lane). You can export as readable text or JSON (with schema meta). When importing, paste into the Import modal — Kanbaroo detects whether it’s a Task or Lane and will regenerate IDs safely.
Q Can I import/export whole Boards?
Yes. From the Boards list (index), each board card has actions for Share/Export. You can download a board JSON (.kanbaroo.json) or import one through the Import modal.
Q How do lane metrics work?
Each lane header shows a metric badge. Click it to cycle Count → Points → Hours (estimated). The setting applies to all lanes on the board and is remembered per board.
Q What controls the order of cards? What’s “By Priority”?
Use the Order By select in the board toolbar: Updated (newest), Created, Title (A→Z), Points (high→low), or Due date. If By Priority is enabled, cards are grouped High → Normal → Low first, then your chosen ordering is applied within each group.
Q How do I edit a task and manage subtasks?
Click a card to open the Editor modal. You can change all fields (title, description, lane, type, priority, points, hours, assignee, due date). Subtasks support notes, completion ticks, and actions like Promote to task or Remove. Cards with subtasks show a progress bar.
Q Is there mobile support?
Yes. On small screens, the three lanes become a horizontal, swipeable snap carousel with pager dots. The toolbar collapses into a Tools menu while preserving the same actions.
Q Is there a mobile app?
Not yet. We plan to start working on it once the overall design and layout of version 1 is defined and ready for release. We will update the site once we have a target date set, we just have no idea when this will be yet.
Q Keyboard shortcuts?
On Boards list
- Alt + N — New Board
- Alt + D — Toggle Theme
- Alt + S — Storage
On a Board
- Alt + N — New Task
- Alt + F — Focus Filter
- Alt + D — Toggle Theme
- Alt + X — Close Board
- Esc — Close modals/menus
Q How does theming work? Is there Dark Mode?
Yes. Toggle theme via the main menu or Alt+D. Your choice is saved and applied across the app.
Q Privacy — do you track anything?
No tracking. All data stays on your device (Browser store) or in the file you select. There’s no account system and no telemetry.
Q Backups and recovery?
We recommend periodic Export of boards (or binding to a file in your cloud‑sync folder). If your browser clears storage, just Import your JSON or re‑authorize the bound file via Reconnect.
Q What’s planned next?
Planned items include custom lanes & WIP limits, templates, recurring tasks, multi‑select & undo/redo, calendar/timeline, comments & attachments, richer reporting, and a full offline PWA shell. Check the Version History in the app for updates.
